He left school at the age of 15 to become a pipe-fitter.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1954.
He had a daughter named Betty with his wife Elizabeth Maranville.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame the same year as catcher Bill Dickey.
