Navajo painter whose best-known works included portraits of strong Native American women and "Natoma," a patinated bronze sculpture. He was called the Picasso of American Indian art by the New York Times.
His 1958 trip to Mexico inspired him to become an artist, and he moved to San Francisco to begin his career.
He sold his artwork to Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, and other celebrities.
He was born on a Navajo reservation near Arizona's Canyon de Chelly to painter an teacher Carl Gorman.
His private art collection included works by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall.
