He taught theology in the Archdiocese of Fianarantsoa in Madagascar in 1994.
He was one of the cardinal electors in both the 2005 and 2013 papal conclaves.
Two of his six sisters are nuns.
He was elevated to cardinalate by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
