An American author of both fiction and nonfiction, he is known for works such as Lawnboy (novel) and Famous Builder (memoir). He taught creative writing at several universities, including New York University, Sarah Lawrence College, and Cornell University.
After earning a master's degree in English from Rutgers, he studied creative writing at the renowned University of Iowa Writers' Workshop.
He received multiple literary awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
