Former Nazi who is thought to have had a hand in the killing of more than 59,000 people during the Holocaust. He was the commanding officer of the Einsatzgruppe C death squad and was eventually hanged for his crimes following the Nuremberg trials.
He earned an Iron Cross for his service in World War I.
In 1942, he was relieved of his duty as the commander of Einsatzgruppe C as a reuslt of his rampant alcoholism.
He was born in Potsdam and grew up in Remscheid.
He was tasked with eliminating the Jewish population by Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
