Parveen Shakir
Poet
Poet, teacher, and civil servant who was awarded the Pride of Performance, Pakistan's most prestigious literary honor. Her literary works span the ghazal and free-verse genres and include such titles as Khushbu, Khud-kalaami, and Inkaar.
She attended both the University of Karachi and Harvard University. She published her first poetry collection when she was twenty-four years old.
She died in a 1994 car accident. The road on which her car collided with a bus was re-named in her honor.
She married Naseer Ali, a doctor. Prior to their divorce, she and Ali became parents to a son.
She and fellow poet Samina Raja were both born in Pakistan.
