Osamu Shimomura
Chemist
Nobel Prize-winning Japanese organic chemist and marine biologist who received the prestigious Order of Culture from Japan in 2008.
He was living in Nagasaki with his family when the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb in August of 1945.
He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for the discovery and development of green fluorescent protein.
He had two children with his wife and research partner, Akemi, whom he married in 1960.
He shared the Nobel Prize with his American colleague Martin Chalfie.
