Pakistani, Urdu-language poet known for free-verse collections such as Mavra and La Musawi Insan. One of his poems, "Zindagi sey dartey ho," appeared in song version in a 2010 Bollywood film.
He received a degree in economics, served in the Royal Indian Army, and worked for the United Nations.
He broke with the Urdu tradition of the ghazal and instead wrote free-verse poetry.
He was married twice -- to a woman named Safia and, following her death, to Sheila Angelini -- and fathered several children.
His early poems were influenced by the work of John Keats.
