Daughter of Clarence Avant who is a music executive and chairman of Motown Records. She is known for being the former Ambassador to Barbados from 2009 to 2011.
She graduated from California State University, Northridge with a B.A. in Communications in 1990. She began her career working in the promotional division of A&M records. She was the Southern California finance co-chairwoman for the Barack Obama 2008 presidential campaign.
She produced the 2019 Netflix film The Black Godfather about her father's life. She is the first black woman and youngest appointed as ambassador to Barbados.
She is the daughter of Clarence and Jackie Avant. Her mother was fatally shot during a home invasion in December 2021. She is married to Netflix Co-Chief Executive Officer Ted Sarandos.
She and her husband purchased a beachfront house in Malibu, California from actor and comedian David Spade for $10.2 million.
