Tobacco heiress and prominent philanthropist. The daughter of James Buchanan Duke, she established Duke Gardens in New Jersey (not to be confused with the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the North Carolina campus of Duke University) and managed the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
She grew up on Duke Farms in New Jersey.
She increased her father's already massive fortune fourfold and used the money to patronize artists and collect antiques.
Her grandfather, Washington Duke, started a tobacco monopoly after the Civil War, which her father inherited and passed along to her when she was twelve years old.
She and Barbara Hutton, the billionaire Woolworths heiress, were both their for their families' fortunes.
