He earned an M.F.A. in painting from Yale University, where he taught for the next ten years.
His paintings, which sometimes measured 8' x 10', featured subjects such as water, rocky crags, beaver habitats, and trees.
He had four children with his wife Norma.
He and abstract artist Willem de Kooning were contemporaries.
