A renowned media theorist and critic, he published his popular, television-themed work, Amusing Ourselves to Death, in 1985. His other works include The Disappearance of Childhood (1982), Technopoly (1992), and The End of Education: Redefining the Value of School (1995).
He earned a doctorate in education from the Teachers College, Columbia University.
In Amusing Ourselves to Death, he argues that as television was replacing the written word, we were losing the ability to share substantive ideas.
He was born and raised in New York City. He and his wife were married for nearly fifty years and had three children.
His work inspired Roger Waters' concept album, Amused to Death.
