In 2015, this All Progressives Congress Party politician and former Head of State of Nigeria and Governor of the Northeastern State of Nigeria was elected President of Nigeria.
Before beginning his political career, he served in the Nigerian Army.
In the early 1980s, he helped lead a military operation that deposed Nigerian President Shehu Shagari.
One of more than twenty children born to Adamu Buhari, he was raised by his mother, Zulaihat, in Nigeria's Katsina State. His two marriages -- to Safinatu Yusuf (1971-1988) and Aisha Halilu (beginning in 1989)-- produced a total of ten children.
He succeeded Goodluck Jonathan as President of Nigeria.
