He had to become the provider for the family after his mother's death.
He served in two wars, spent time in exile in Siberia, went on a colonizing expedition to Madagascar, and fought for the Americans in the Revolutionary War.
He called himself a Hungarian and Polish nobleman, and became a national hero of Slovakia.
His second trip to Madagascar was assisted by the descendant of another their explorer--Ferdinand Magellan.
