Known for collaborations with lyricist Jerry Leiber on Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, On Broadway, and numerous other songs.
He played the piano when he was younger. He met Leiber while he was a freshman at Los Angeles City College and Leiber was a senior at Fairfax High.
He and Leiber were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
He married Corky Hale.
He and Leiber had a profound influence on Phil Spector who learned from them the power of surrounding singers with highly sophisticated production values.
