Known for collaborating on Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Stand by Me, and others with composer Mike Stoller.
He used to work in a record store. He and Stoller's collaboration with The Coasters on Young Blood, Searchin', Yakety Yak, and other hits helped the team break through.
He and Stoller were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
He was born into a Jewish family. He fathered three sons.
He and Stoller mentored Phil Spector and influenced his approach to the Wall of Sound.
