Director of the Oscar-nominated film Letters from Marusia as well as El Chacal de Nahueltoro, one of the most popular Chilean films ever made.
He was born in Palmilla and gained attention in 1973 with The Promised Land.
He was exiled in México shortly after Augusto Pinochett came to power in a military coup.
He married Elizabeth Menz.
His film Letters from Marusia was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, but it lost to Black and White in Color by French director Jean-Jacques Annaud.
