Iconic and influential Italian surrealist director. His 1960 film La Dolce Vita earned the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival and he became the first director to win four Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film for his features La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, 8 1/2 and Amarcord.
Growing up, he developed a passion for drawing and staging puppet shows.
His third feature, 1953's I Vitelloni, earned him international attention. The film received the Venice Film Festival Silver Lion Award as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing.
