Miguel Iglesias
World Leader
This nineteenth-century politician and military leader held office as President of Peru from 1882 until 1885. A decade earlier, he had raised an army and carried out an unsuccessful revolt against the administration of Peruvian President Manuel Pardo.
He began his rise to power after his friend, Nicolas de Pierola, seized the Peruvian presidency through an 1879 coup d'etat.
In early 1881, he organized an army to defend Peru's capital against a Chilean offensive.
He was born in Cajamarca, Peru to Rosa Pino and Lorenzo Iglesias. His marriage to Maria de Posadas resulted in eleven children.
He and Ramon Castilla were both nineteenth-century military leaders and presidents of Peru.
