Coach of the Australian rules football club Carlton took over the post after four years at Footscray and nine in West Coast.
He played with St. Kilda and Richmond for 11 years total, retiring in 1983.
In his highly successful stint with the West Coast Eagles he led the team to premierships in three grand final appearances, and had the highest win ratio.
His daughter Christi reported AFL games for Network Ten.
He coached the AFL Hall of Fame player Dean Kemp during both his championship runs with West Coast.
