He started playing piano when he was three and entered Vlado Perlemuter's class at the Paris Conservatoire when he was 12.
He was awarded the Knight of the Ordre National de Merite from the French Government in 1996.
He came from a non-musical family and grew up in Paris.
He and Billy Joel both became acclaimed pianists.
