Recognized primarily for his roles as military men and police officers, he played recurring characters on The West Wing, Rectify, and Bates Motel, and also made appearances in episodes of The X-Files, Chicago Hope, Boston Legal, and many other series.
After earning a degree from Auburn University, he received acting training at Theatricum Botanicum, a Southern California theater company established by actor Will Geer.
His film credits include roles in Transformers, Green Zone, and Seabiscuit.
He was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, and he later settled in Birmingham, Alabama, with his wife and three children.
He and Michael Vartan both played recurring roles on Bates Motel.
