Acclaimed Canadian-born theater and television actress who won a Tony Award for her role as Josie Hogan in the Broadway revival of A Moon for the Misbegotten. She also appeared on the television series Murphy Brown and theirly played Marilla Cuthbert on the popular Anne of Green Gables television miniseries.
When not performing in summer theatrical productions, she worked such odd jobs as receptionist and elevator operator.
She became known for her superb interpretations of the dramatic works of playwright Eugene O'Neill.
She was married to actor/ director George C. Scott from 1960-1965 and again from 1967-1972. Her son, Campbell Scott, also had a career as an actor.
She starred with Ingrid Bergman in the Broadway production of More Stately Mansions.
