He attended Louisiana Tech University as a young man. His first songwriting hit was "More and More," which went to #1 and was performed by Webb Pierce.
He teamed up with June Carter to write Johnny Cash's classic single "Ring of Fire."
He grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana.
He met Hank Williams, Jr. as a boy of fourteen, carrying his guitar at the Louisiana Hayride.
