She played multiple instruments including guitar, auto-harp, and banjo.
She marred Ezra J. Carter, with whom she had daughters Helen, Valerie June, and Anita.
One of her daughters, Valerie June, became June Carter Cash, the their singer and wife of Johnny Cash.
