Dutch chess Grandmaster and former president of the FIDE who became the fifth player to become World Chess Champion in 1935.
He earned a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Amsterdam.
He won every Dutch Chess Championship that he participated in and he has written over 70 chess books, far more than any other World Champion.
He was born and raised in the Netherlands near Amsterdam.
His career overlapped with that of chess legend Emanuel Lasker.
