He played youth cricket in Australia as a teenager, before going pro as a 19-year old.
On October 10, 2003, he set an individual Test innings record, scoring 380 runs on just 437 balls.
He raised three children with his wife Kellie Hayden.
His test innings mark broke a record that Brian Lara had held for nine years.
