Martina Arroyo

American opera singer who had a successful international career from the 1960s until the 1980s.
She sang in the choir at her Baptist church when she was a child and later earned a B.A. in Romance languages from Hunter College when she was 19 years old.
She has worked as a teacher at schools like Louisiana State University and UCLA since she retired from singing in 1989.
She was born the youngest of two children to Demetrio Arroyo and Lucille Washington.
She often performed with New York Philharmonic conductor Leonard Bernstein.
