American discus thrower and all around athlete who won five Olympic gold medals in the early 20th Century.
He competed in his first Olympics in 1904, taking gold in the discus throw.
He died a day before his 37th victory as a casualty of the 1918 flu pandemic.
He was born in Ireland to Eli and Camille Sheridan.
He competed in his last Olympics in 1908, four years before another early 20th Century Olympic legend, Jim Thorpe, stepped onto the scene.
