Horseman who won equestrian gold at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and was named Rider of the 20th Century by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports.
He wanted to become a jockey but grew to be six-foot-two, pushing him into show jumping.
He won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics.
He was born in Cambridge, New Zealand.
Soccer midfielder Cole Peverley also competed for New Zealand in the 2008 Olympics.
