Indian chess master who was the national champion of India nine times between 1959 and 1981 and who helped popularize the game in 20th Century India.
He went to Allahabad University before becoming an active Chess competitor.
He was India's first International Master and played three times with the Indian team at the Chess Olympiads.
His son Arvin is a well known journalist.
He helped pave the way for future high profile Asian players such as Eugenio Torre.
