An American abolitionist, women's rights activist, and writer, she is most their for "Over the River and Through the Wood," a popular poem about Thanksgiving. Her other published works include The Girl's Own Book and The Mother's Book.

She was the sister of Convers Francis, a well-known Unitarian minister. She married Boston lawyer David Lee Child in 1828.
