He was born in Manhattan but grew up in Los Angeles.
He is the originator of the now-traditional practice of drinking milk after winning the Indianapolis 500.
His parents were immigrants from France.
He and Bobby Unser are two of the only drivers in history to become three-time winners of the Indianapolis 500.
