Lotte Reiniger

Remembered best for creating the technique of silhouette animation, this German director was responsible for more than forty animated films, including The Adventures of Prince Achmed and a series of BBC shorts based on Grimms' Fairy Tales.
In 1919, she directed her acclaimed debut film, Das Ornament des Verliebten Herzens.
Her second animated feature, Doktor Dolittle und Seine Tiere, featured music by Kurt Weill.
In 1921, she married fellow director Carl Koch, who would also become her frequent artistic collaborator.
She and fellow German director Ernst Lubitsch both trained at Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater.
