He was a member of the championship team at Cambridge's 1950 Boat Race.
He is best known for his portraits of world notables, which often appeared in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and the National Portrait Gallery has more than 100 of his photographs in its collection.
His great-great-uncle was prominent architect Alfred Messel.
Laurence Olivier was one of his more well known portraiture subjects.
