She worked as a secondary school English teacher until 2000, at which point she dedicated herself to a full-time writing career.
She taught for the Arvon Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of creative writing.
She spent her childhood in Essex, England and began writing stories and poetry at a young age.
She and fellow English author Helen Dunmore were born in the same year and both had successful careers as children's authors.
