She began her professional singing and acting career in 1923, acting in the theater play Madre Tierra.
Throughout her career, she had appeared in over 65 films and recorded over 800 songs. In 2000, she won her only Ariel Lifetime Achievement award despite being nominated multiple times.
She was born of Uruguayan and Spanish descent. She was married twice, and she had one child named Mirtha.
She acted alongside Gabriela Spanic in the 1998 television series La usurpadora.
