Pioneer swimmer who was the first man to swim across the North Pole, we well as the first to complete long-distance swims in every region of the world.
He studied Politics and Law at the University of Cape Town, after moving to South Africa with his family as a child.
He also fights to protect oceans and ecosystems, while practicing as a maritime lawyer.
He married Antoinette Malherbe in 2009.
His book 21 Yaks and a Speedo was called an inspiration by Bishop Desmond Tutu .
