Bishop Desmond Tutu
Religious Leader
South African social rights activist well-known for his opposition to Apartheid. He later became the first black Archbishop of Cape Town. He has also worked to end AIDS, poverty, racism, and homophobia throughout the world.
He was a school teacher but resigned when the Bantu Education Act was passed.
He won many peace prizes, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
He married Nomalizo Leah Shenxane in 1955. The couple raised three daughters named Theresa, Mpho and Naomi and a son named Trevor.
He received the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005.
