Vietnam War veteran who served in the Marines, whose autobiography won the Pulitzer Prize in 1991.
He lost both of his legs in an explosion in Vietnam and subsequently received the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
He ran for a congressional seat in Virginia, but lost in a landslide to the Republican incumbent.
He had two children with his wife, Linda.
He got the title for his autobiography, Fortunate Son, from a John Fogerty song of the same name.
