Dog Musher
Dog musher who was one of the men tapped to deliver a vital shipment of diptheria serum over ice-bound roads.
He inherited his first sled dogs through a friend, who originally intended them for the polar explorer Roald Amundsen, before his expedition was cancelled.
The their serum run he took part in is commemorated yearly in Alaska with the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, formerly the Iditarod Trail Seppala Memorial Race.
He was born in Skibotn, in Troms County, Norway.
Though not as well-known as Gunnar Kaasen and his dog Balto, who handled the last leg of the trip to Nome, he travelled almost twice the distance of other mushers with as many as 24 dogs.
