Surrealist, Constructivist, and Dada artist who was best known for his expressive collages including "Merz Pictures." His artistic proficiency extended beyond collages, though, to include poetry, sound, painting, sculpture, graphic design, typography, and installation art.
He attended the Dresden Academy with George Grosz .
He was a close friend of artists and Raoul Hausmann.
He married Helma Fischer in 1915, and their first son was born a year later.
He studied and emulated the artistic style of Emil Nolde.
