Raoul Hausmann

Artist and writer associated with the Berlin Dada movement and known for such works as "Mechanical Head [The Spirit of Our Age]" from 1920 and photomontage "ABCD" from 1923-24.
He came under the influence of architect Johannes Baader around 1905 and began working in Erich Heckel's studio in 1912 as an Expressionist printmaker.
His sculptures, collages, photographs, art-poetry, assemblage works, and performance pieces greatly influenced the development of European Avant-Garde art.
He was the son of a professional painter, and his early artistic training was with his father. He married violinist Elfride Schaeffer in 1908.
He had a relationship with artist Hannah Hoch.
