Scottish Roman Catholic cardinal who resigned as the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 2013 amidst allegations of sexual misconduct.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Edinburgh in 1959.
The Church ordered him to leave Scotland following his admission of inappropriate sexual activity with junior priests.
He moved with his family from Northern Ireland to Scotland, where his father was serving with Royal Navy, when he was young.
He was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
