He obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1972
He claimed that LSD helped him develop the polymerase chain reaction that helps amplify specific DNA sequences.
He was married four times and had three children by two ex-wives.
He was friends with LSD creator Albert Hofmann.
