She began her career as a model, and appeared in various television commercials before auditioning for a role in Dev.D.
She was nominated for her second Filmfare Award in 2011 for her performance in the commercially and critically successful film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
She married screenwriter Anureg Kashyap in 2011 but the two split in 2015.
Like the iconic Vanessa Redgrave, she studied at the University of London.
