He received a Bachelor's degree in philosophy from the Holy Redeemer College, Waterford, Wisconsin in 1977.
He fluently speaks five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.
He is the oldest of 13 children.
He was named the archbishop of Indianapolis by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
