He was a noted expert in mechanical engineering, but his passion was mountaineering.
He was one of the founding members of the Sierra Club.
His uncle John Le Conte was was the president of the University of California, Berkeley for one year.
His partner in the Sierra Club, John Muir, named a High Sierra trail after him.
