He started singing in 1956 and signed with Duke Records the following year.
In 1987 his album Showdown! received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
His daughter is musician
He performed alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival.
