His family moved from the small town of Knoxville to Columbus, Georgia, when he was a child. In 1853, he married Miss Lewis in Columbus. They had only one child named Charles Ney Pemberton. In 1853, he married Miss Lewis in Columbus. Their only child, Charles Ney Pemberton, was born in 1854.
His recipe was purchased by Asa Candler for $2,300, and they created the Coca-Cola company together.
